Verizon already offers postpaid and prepaid service and powers some MVNOs, too, and now it looks like another operator recently launched on Verizon's network.
Visible is a new provider that runs on Verizon's 4G LTE network. The service launched earlier this year and what's notable is that, according to a report from TechCrunch, Visible is a startup that was backed by Verizon. Little is known about how much Verizon paid to get Visible started, but the service's leadership team is largely made up of former employees.
With Visible, you pay $40 per month for unlimited talk, text, and data. Data speeds top out at 5Mbps and video streaming is limited to 480p resolution. There is no mobile hotspot included. To pay for your service, you can use PayPal, Venmo, or a credit card.
Visible is currently invite-only, which means that you'll need a current Visible customer to invite you if you want to try it out. The service only supports the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X right now, but Android support is said to be coming soon. Also of note is that Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP), so Visible has no phones to sell you.
If you do get invited to Visible and you have a compatible device, you can sign up using the Visible app or on the web. The company will overnight you a SIM card and then you can pop it in your device and be on your way.
Visible has some neat aspects, like the fact that you can pay using PayPal and Venmo, and the pricing of $40 for unlimited on Verizon's network could be attractive to a lot people. The fact that it's limited to a handful of iPhone models is, well, kind of limiting, as is the invite-only aspect of the service. Hopefully Visible can expand in both ways soon.
