One of the biggest features of smartphones is that they allow you to connect to the internet anywhere, letting you browse Twitter and Facebook, check out websites, and more, all on the go. But today Samsung has introduced two new phones that don't have an internet connection.
The Samsung Galaxy J2 Pro was made official in South Korea today. It offers calling, texting, and a camera, but mobile data is totally blocked, including 3G, LTE, and Wi-Fi.
The device is being targeted at seniors who don't want to worry about data charges and students who need to focus on their studies. In fact, Samsung is running a special offer to students who are between the ages of 18 and 21: Buy a Galaxy J2 Pro and return it after you take the 2019 or 2020 College Scholastic Ability Test, and you can get reimbursed for the price of the Galaxy J2 Pro if you buy a Galaxy S, Galaxy A, or Galaxy Note phone.
The price of the Galaxy J2 Pro is 199,100 won, or around $186 USD. For that price, you're getting a phone with a 5-inch qHD (960x540) Super AMOLED display, 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 8MP rear and 5MP front cameras, 1.5GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. There's also a microSD slot for adding more storage and a 2600mAh battery powering the whole package.
While this Galaxy J2 Pro likely isn't going to appeal to many people because of its lack of an internet connection, it could be a useful device for the consumers that Samsung is targeting. For example, students could use it to stay connected with loved ones using the phone, and they could also use its calculator, calendar, and English dictionary app to help with their studies, all while not being distracted by social networks and the web in general.
