Every year for the last eight or so years, we’ve seen a brand new Samsung Galaxy S smartphone. Last year, we had the Samsung Galaxy S8. This year, we’re very likely to see the Samsung Galaxy S9. The reveal date has never been for certain but Samsung does like to reveal a new flagship in the first quarter of the year. And Samsung’s smartphone chief has actually confirmed that the Galaxy S9 and the S9+ will be revealed at Mobile World Congress (MWC) this year, which occurs somewhere between February 26th and March 1st. So that’s when we’re going to see a brand new Samsung smartphone.

So yes, the Galaxy S9 will be launched alongside the Galaxy S9+. And we actually have a pretty good idea as to what kind of specifications and features both devices will have. But keep in mind that none of these are confirmed and they could change a little bit.

With that said, the S9 is going to feature a 5.8-inch QHD Super AMOLED display while the S9+ will feature a 6.2-inch display. Both display sizes are the same as the smartphones we had last year, the S8 and S8+. In terms of power and performance, we’re going to see the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor or the Exynos 9810 processor for the international model with either 4 or 6GB of RAM. And my money is that we will see the 6GB of RAM with the Galaxy S9+ and the 4GB of RAM with the standard S9.

The overall design is going to be very similar to last year’s Galaxy S8 with some small exceptions. The biggest of which is that the fingerprint scanner is rumored to be relocated slightly underneath of the camera sensor instead of right next to it. So this will make it much easier to actually locate and reach with your finger. And you’re not going to smear up the camera lens on accident as much.

The Galaxy S8 was expected to launch with in-display fingerprint sensor but the sensor wasn’t able to get mass produced in time so it’s more likely we’re going to see the S9 feature such a sensor. But even then, many analysts are suggesting just a relocated rear-facing fingerprint scanner. Other than that bit of news, we’re gonna see black, gold, blue, and purple color configurations.

We are going to see the Bixby button’s return. Samsung is going to continue to shove Bixby down our throats whether we like it or not, just to try and get us to use it. I don’t use it. Maybe one of you use it. There will be a USB-C port located on the bottom of the phone used for charging. And surprise, surprise--there will be a headphone jack in not only the S9 but all of Samsung’s 2018 smartphones.

I know many of you are looking forward to a big camera refresh. But unfortunately, the S9 and S9+ will return with similar specifications in the camera department. The larger S9+ will feature a dual-camera setup similar to the Galaxy Note 8. They’ll be stacked on top of each other instead of side by side so that’s kind of new. One will feature a 12-megapixel f/1.7 main shooter with optical image stabilization while the other sensor will feature a telephoto 12-megapixel f/2.4 sensor with OIS as well.

As of making this video, a picture of the supposed packaging leaked and there are two apertures listed: an f/1.5 and f/2.4 aperture suggesting that the camera could switch apertures. Also mentioned is an 8-megapixel front-facing sensor.

As for battery capacities, we’re probably gonna see a 3,000mAh battery in the S9 and a 3,500mAh battery in the S9+ similar to last year. And as much as I’d like to see front-facing speakers, it does not look like we’re gonna see that sort of big design overhaul this year. The recent leak of the packaging does however suggest that we’re going to see stereo speakers tuned by AKG, which means that we’ll likely see a bottom-facing speaker and a call speaker that can be tuned to output a louder sound, therefore making stereo speakers.

We’re also going to see IP68 water and dust-resistance ratings, a microSD card slot for expandable storage, and support for all four major carriers here in the US.

So those are all the major specifications and features of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+. Both of these devices, as you can tell, are going to be pretty incremental updates. If you’re a spec or feature junkie like I am, you’re going to probably spring for the S9+. It’s going to feature a larger display, dual cameras, larger battery, and potentially even more RAM.
