Uber users, a major new feature is coming your way soon.
Uber has announced its 180 Days of Change initiative, a driver-focused effort in which Uber will “step up and give you the driving experience you deserve.” One of the first steps of this effort is to add tipping to the Uber app.
Tipping is launching today in Seattle, Minneapolis, and Houston. More cities will be added over the coming weeks as Uber monitors the rollout and makes sure that everything is working as it should. All Uber drivers in the U.S. should have tipping by then end of July 2017.
When tipping goes live in a city, Uber drivers will receive a notification and be able to activate tipping. Uber riders and UberEATS customers will then be able to tip a driver after rating their trip. There will be preset tip amounts to choose from, or the rider can manually enter a tip amount. Riders can add a tip up to 30 days after their trip, and drivers can cash out their tips at any time using Instant Pay.
In the past, Uber has said that tipping drivers wasn’t necessary so that the riding experience smoother for customers. Uber rival Lyft recently added support for tipping drivers in its app, though, which makes tipping a driver pretty easy since you don’t have to fumble around with cash. Now Uber is doing the same, and this is a welcome change that’ll make more money for drivers and make it easier for those customers that want to tip to do so.
