Not too long ago, I wrote about how the accessories we invest in for our phones can sometimes hinder our decision to upgrade – particularly if you've spent a lot of money on accessories for one specific phone. In that same article I also wrote about how I wasn't particularly fond of my Galaxy S7, and hadn't invested in many accessories. Because of that, I felt like it wouldn't be too big of a deal to switch if I really wanted to.

Well, I opted to go ahead and keep the S7. It may not be my favorite device, but I've decided that the camera is too good for me to give it up. So my search for the perfect accompanying accessories began.

I say accessories, but in my case I find that I mostly purchase… well, cases. I still have two or three cases just laying around for a lot of previously owned devices. For phones that I've kept longer, there's undoubtedly a whole gaggle of cases that have either been lost, broken, or just plain unaccounted for. I can't deny it – I love cases.

Recently I find that I like cases because as phones have gotten thinner and built with more “premium” materials, most aren't made with grip-ability in mind. Glass, aluminum, and even polycarbonate are typically materials that tend to slip right out of my hands. We all know what's likely to happen if you drop a phone made primarily out of glass on both sides (which the S7 does - it's pretty, but an impractical design), but aluminum and polycarbonate have their own issues when dropped. Aluminum can dent and chip, and polycarbonate can get scratched and crack.

I’m not sure there's an “indestructible” solution out there for phones, so it's just something we deal with, and everybody deals with it differently. Not everybody has fingers made out of sticks of butter, as I seem to, so some people are able to enjoy these designs. But not me. I absolutely, positively have to have a case on my phone.

I just ordered my fourth case for the S7. The first case I got was a transparent case to show off its glossy back. However, I quickly realized that a clear case is just as much of a fingerprint magnet as the device’s own glass back. I wanted something that wouldn't annoy me so much, and also something that gave a better grip.

Next I went with Bear Motion, a company who made cases I already knew I liked from my HTC One days. The cases are slim and have a sand paper-y feel to them, so they don't add bulk and they're extremely grippy – not to mention super cheap – but they are easily broken and, at least for my S7, didn't prove to be very protective against drops. The top and bottom are somewhat exposed, and I ended up dropping my phone on pavement, which resulted in chipping the aluminum frame. Twice. So it was time to look for something more protective.

The case I currently have is the OBLIQ Slim Meta Rose Gold case. I like the color, but it provides little to no grip. But the phone itself has been adequately protected from drops, so it has that going for it. It's still not my favorite case, so today I ordered yet another case: the Incipio Twill Block case, which should arrive in a few days.

I always hope for the best when I order a new case, but even when you read all of the positive reviews in the world you might still find that this case isn't the case for you. And if you're like me, even if you do find that case that works for you, you'll probably end up changing it up somehow in a few months anyway. If nothing else, it's a good way to keep your phone feeling fresh and somewhat new.
