Heads up, Android gamers, because Google is making some notable changes to Google Play Games.
Google today announced Gamer ID, its new user handle for Google Play Games. Gamer ID will be your new identity on Play Games, and it’s being introduced so that Google can decouple Google+ from Play Games. Your Gamer ID can be up to 20 characters long and, once you’ve selected it, you’ll also be able to select one of 40 Gamer Pictures for your avatar (shown below).
Gamer IDs are unique, and so you’ll want to grab yours soon to make sure that you get exactly the name that you want. Google says that Gamer IDs will be rolling out “over the next few weeks.”
After you’ve created your Gamer ID, you’ll have the option of making your game activity public or private. You’ll also be able to decide if other people will be able to associate your Gamer ID with your email address or name.
Google has been slowly decoupling Google+ from most of its services lately, including Photos, and so it’s no surprise to see Google Play Games being separated from Google+, too. This change isn’t a huge one, but it will let you choose a personalized Gamer ID for your Play Games account, making the service a bit more like Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.
