After teasing a near-stock AOSP ROM last month, Oppo has now officially released the first beta version of its vanilla Android software.
Named “Project Spectrum,” Oppo’s ROM aims to offer an operating system that’s nearly stock Android, just with a few Oppo bits mixed in. For example, Oppo has included its custom camera app as well as its VOOC fast charging and MaxxAudio enhancements. Oppo’s Project Spectrum also offers two screen-off gestures: double tap to wake and the ability to draw a circle to launch the camera.
Project Spectrum V1.0 beta is based on Android 5.1.1 and is currently only available on the Find 7 and Find 7a. Full install instructions can be found here. Oppo plans to extend Project Spectrum to other devices such as the R5 and R5s.
While I’m sure that there are some folks that enjoy Oppo’s custom ColorOS user interface, there are likely some Oppo users that’d like to have a near-stock version of Android on their phones, too. With Project Spectrum, Oppo is listening to those customers and giving them a ROM that’s darn close to vanilla Android. They’ll be a bit behind the Nexus phones and their true stock Android builds, but Oppo is promising Marshmallow updates in early 2016, so that’s something to look forward to
