In recent years, Sony has done a good job of offering its Android smartphones unlocked and commitment-free through its online shop. Unfortunately, it looks like Sony’s online store will soon close its virtual doors.
Sony has revealed that its online Sony Store will soon close. In an email to customers, Sony says that the shop will close up at 1:00 pm PT/4:00 pm ET on August 28. Sony hasn’t said why it’s online store is closing, but it did say that it plans to “soon unveil a new online product showcase and more ways to shop.”
As I mentioned before, Sony has been one of the biggest supporters of the unlocked, direct-to-consumer smartphone sales movement. The carrier model is still dominant in the US, though, and it seems unlikely that the Sony Store ever saw major mobile sales if it’s going to be closing next month. It remains to be seen what Sony plans to do in terms of consumer sales once August 28 rolls around, but hopefully they’ve got some other sales method.
Have you ever ordered anything from Sony’s online store
