Though the technology eyes are centered on CTIA at the moment, being the BlackBerry addict that I am, I have to wonder what RIM has in store at WES 2009 in Orlando, Florida. Based on rumors circulating around the web, several things could be announced:
- BlackBerry Curve 8900 for AT&T. Those that are using unlocked 8900's on the carrier have reported that AT&T service books are appearing on their devices, making it almost certain that their version of the phone is on the way.
- BlackBerry "Niagra" 9630. We've reported on it several times, and it is quite possibly the biggest rumor surrounding WES 2009. According to various sources, the device is expected to land on Canadian CDMA carriers in late May/early June, and will arrive in the states in June/July. Oddly enough, the hype of the device launch in the US centers around Verizon; no one seems to be talking about a launch on Sprint.
- BES 5.0 and OS 5.0. Covered in several blogs on the internet, both could be announced during the convention.
- Testing of LTE devices. Potentially embarrassed by the launch of the Bold as 3G begins to be replaced by LTE, select devices may be announced that show RIM's commitment to the 4G standard.
- Devices with 1GHz processors. Rumors are circulating that RIM will launch one or two devices with 1GHz processors within the next 9-12 months.
Should these rumors pan out for RIM, it will certainly up the ante in the smartphone race.
