So not everyone loved the image used in the post about the Palm "New-ness," which showed some unidentifiable doo-hickey from abroad. Sure, it IS a little goofy-looking. And was it supposed to be a phone or a little computer with trackpad and mouse buttons? You might be asking yourself, Who knows? Who cares?

Well, Nokia does, apparently. No, not about that specific gadget, but it did file an application with the U.S. Patent & Trademark office for an interesting swiveling phone design of its own.

The manufacturer posits here that a huge screen can be integrated without grossly exceeding the limits of normal human cellular portability -- that is, if the display swivels out from under the keyboard.

It's a great sign that at least some companies are trying to lead the way forward with design. Better to experiment with form factors than continuously rip off other brands. But yikes -- even if this gets off the drawing board, I don't think I'll be standing in line for it. (Although I'd love to see Nokia integrate so much awesomeness into it that I eat my words.)

Keep your eyes peeled. If this ever makes it to market, you know PhoneDog's gonna be all over it.
