Palm has released a security update for the Treo 650, 680, and 700p Palm OS based smartphones. The update addresses an exploit which uses the Find application from the 'Make Emergency Calls' screen to get around password protection. As a result, unauthorized users can see search results from Contacts, Calendar, Email and other applications.

Kapersky Labs has issued a warning for Series 60 users regarding "Viver," the first Trokan SMS virus to be spotted for the Symbian-based smartphone platform. The virus, disguised as an application (like a game, photo editor, or other app) sends SMS messages to a premium number which charges anywhere between $1 and $10 per message, with half of the revenue going into the perp's pockets. As always, beware of installing applications from unknown/untrusted sources.
