Been thinking about picking up a new iPhone? If you're nodding your head right now, you may way to hold off on that purchase just a little bit longer. According to a report from 9to5Mac, Apple will likely kick off its yearly Back to School promotion this week, and it may be planning to include the iPhone for the first time.
Apple's Back to School promotion gives buyers of new hardware a free iTunes gift card with their purchase. Typically these Back to School promos only apply to items like Macs and iPads, but today's report claims that iPhone will be included this year as well, marking the first time that Apple's smartphone has been eligible for the deal. Customers that purchase Mac products can expect to receive a $100 gift card with their purchase, while consumers that pick up new iOS hardware will be treated to a $50 gift card. The gift cards can be used in the iTunes Store as well as the App Store.
Today's report claims that Apple could be kicking off the Back to School promo as soon as tomorrow, July 2. A separate report from MacRumors claims that that could indeed be the case, as the site was recently informed by a source that Apple retail stores were planning an "overnight" tonight in order to adjust its layout and signage, changes that the tipster said were most likely meant for the Back to School offer.
While Apple's iPhone 5 may not be the freshest smartphone around, the inclusion of a $50 gift card to put toward apps and other content is a nice deal and could be enough to convince some folks to pull the trigger on an iPhone, especially since the new model is expected to be at least a couple of months away. The $50 and $100 gift cards also make Apple's other iOS and Mac products a bit more tempting, so it might be worth it to put that wallet away for another day or so if you've been thinking about picking up a new device from either category. Stay tuned and I'll give you a shout once the Back to School promo officially goes live.
