Remember that Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play edition that leaked out earlier this year? We still haven’t heard any official announcements regarding its whereabouts, but today the device made another appearance on one of Google’s site.
Today Google updated the Android.com home page with all of its Android 5.0 Lollipop goodies. In the process it updated all of the devices shown on that page to Android 5.0, including the Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition. While there’s nothing that specifically calls the device out as the GS5, it certainly looks like Samsung’s flagship phone, but running stock Android 5.0 instead of a TouchWiz-ified OS.
So what’s going on here? It’s kind of a mystery, actually. We’ve been seeing this versions of this Galaxy S5 Google Play edition since April, but haven’t heard a peep about it from Google or Samsung. So for now we still don’t know if this thing will ever see the light of day or not. There’s a chance that it could happen — without those additional virtual navigation buttons, of course — but if it doesn’t launch sometime in the next few months, we’ll be getting awfully close to the window in which Samsung might announce the Galaxy S6.
What do you think? Will we ever see a Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play edition or is this device just a mockup that Google is using to fill space in its graphic?
