A number of Windows Phone 8.1 features have been shown on video in recent weeks, including
the Action Center notification panel and
Cortana personal assistant. Today another new WP8.1 feature has been shown in action, and while it's not quite as big a deal as Action Center or Cortana, it's still worth taking note of.
The clip
shows off Windows Phone 8.1's Wi-Fi Settings menu, which includes the new Wi-Fi Sense feature. It's said that, when activated, Wi-Fi Sense allows users to join Wi-Fi hotspots without having to manually enter personal information like their name and email address. The feature also reportedly allows users to share their Wi-Fi connection with Facebook, Outlook and Skype friends.
Another Wi-Fi setting that's shown in the video is a timer for reactivating the phone's connection. When Wi-Fi is turned off, the user can set it to automatically turn back on in 1 hour, 4 hours or 1 day.
As I mentioned before, these new Wi-Fi settings aren't exactly the biggest additions to a mobile OS that we've ever seen. They are nice little features that should make using Wi-Fi on a Windows Phone 8.1 device a little easier, though, which is really what's important. For example, the Wi-Fi Sense feature should make hopping onto hotspots a slightly quicker process, giving the user more time online while using that connection.
Microsoft is expected to formally unveil Windows Phone 8.1 at its Build developer conference in early April. Until then, you can check out the Wi-Fi Sense demo video down below.
