Geeksphone has been teasing its dual-booting Revolution smartphone since late November, steadily trickling out details about the device and its ability to run both Android and Firefox OS. Today the teasing ends and the buying begins, though, because Geeksphone has finally made its new handset available for purchase.
The Revolution can now be ordered directly from Geeksphone for €222 ($304 USD), which is considerably cheaper than both the €289 regular pricing and €269 early bird pricing that Geeksphone had previously quoted. Shipping will set buyers back an addition €2.90.
Specs for the Geeksphone Revolution include a 4.7-inch IPS 960x540 display, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter. Buried inside of the phone is a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2560 processor, 1GB of RAM. 4GB of storage, a microSD slot and 21Mbps HSPA support on the 850/900/1900/2100MHz airwaves. The Revolution is powered by a 2000mAh battery.
The highlight feature of the Revolution is its ability to run both Android and a version of Mozilla's Firefox OS called Boot2Gecko. Users can switch between the two OSes whenever they'd like, and Geeksphone says that it plans to support the Revolution with over the air software updates.
The Geeksphone Revolution may not be the most high-end piece of kit that we've ever seen, but its ability to run both Android and Firefox OS makes it pretty unique. That feature could make the Revolution a good option for folks that get tired of using the same platform after a certain period of time or for folks that'd like to use Android or Firefox OS as their primary platform while also having the option of dabbling in the other from time to time. Plus, at a price of just €222, the Revolution is pretty easy on the wallet.
