Rumors of a new HP smartphone have been rumbling around the mobile world for quite a while now, hinting that that Meg Whitman and Co. may be planning to reenter the handset market after discontinuing webOS operations in late 2011. Another such report surfaced late last night, and if it's to be believed, the oft-rumored HP smartphone may finally be near.
Sources from within HP have told 9to5Google that the company is planning to introduce a new Android-powered smartphone as soon as next week. The device is described as being similar to Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and is expected to be targeted at prepaid and emerging markets, complete with a price tag that of approximately $200.
The mobile market has been exploding in recent years, with major companies like Apple and Samsung raking in billions and billions of dollars each quarter as consumers continue to snap up smartphones and tablets. For that reason, it's kind of surprising that it's taken HP this long to jump back into wireless world following its brief stint with webOS.
HP has been creeping back into mobile lately, first with the Slate 7 that debuted in April 2013 and then with four new Android-powered tablets that were introduced back in September. The company doesn't seem to have had a ton of success in its return to mobile so far, and so it'll be interesting to see if it has better luck with an inexpensive Android smartphone.
