Remember how Apple and Samsung recently resumed talks for a settlement in their long-standing patent battle? Well it looks like those discussions are about to get a whole lot more serious.
A court filing unearthed by Reuters has revealed that Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon will meet for a mediation session on or before Feb. 19 to discuss their legal fight. The executives will be joined only by in-house lawyers. The meeting follows a Jan. 6 meeting between Apple and Samsung's legal teams at which "settlement opportunities" were discussed, and it comes ahead of the start of the March trial between the two firms.
While it's encouraging to learn that the CEOs of both Apple and Samsung have agreed to mediation, there's no guarantee that the meeting will yield any positive results. After all, the two companies have met for settlement talks multiple times since their legal war began in 2011, and each time they were unable to reach an agreement. There's always a chance that things could be different this time around, though, and so for now we'll just have to remain positive and hope that Tim Cook and Oh-Hyun Kwon can see eye-to-eye and bring an end to this drawn-out patent war.
