Last Friday saw the launch of both the
iPhone 5s and
iPhone 5c, and just as Apple has done in the past, the company this morning shared the initial sales numbers for its new hardware. The Cupertino firm says that it moved a record-breaking nine million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units over the weekend. To compare, the iPhone 5
sold 5 million units over its launch weekend. Apple also announced this morning that there are now over 200 million devices running
its new iOS 7 software.
As a result of the
"incredible demand" that Apple says it saw for its new iPhones over the weekend, some consumers may have been unable to find any stock of the devices at local stores. Today Apple is making it easier for shoppers to locate inventory of the iPhone 5s and 5c at nearby Apple Stores by enabling its
Personal Pickup service for both handsets.
After navigating to Apple's online store and selecting the iPhone model that they want, consumers can select a "Check Availability" option in their order summary to see if any nearby Apple Stores have that unit in stock. If inventory is available, shoppers can order the device and then pick it up from the store. Apple says that if a unit is listed as being "Available Today," it'll usually be ready for pickup within an hour of the order being placed.
With launch weekend iPhone 5s and 5c sales of over 9 million units and iOS 7 adoption going strong, it sounds like Apple had itself a pretty good weekend. It's kind of disappointing that the company hasn't divulged how many of the 9 million devices it sold were iPhone 5s versus iPhone 5c, but since it doesn't typically break down sales stats for different iPhone models during its quarterly reports, its decision not to do so now isn't a total surprise.
