Exact Windows Phone 7 sales numbers have been a little hard to come by ever since the platform launched last year, but AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega used a recent interview to give us a peek into how Microsoft's platform is doing with consumers. When asked about whether or not AT&T would be interested in adding Nokia-made WP7 devices to its lineup, de la Vega said that he and his carrier like Windows Phone 7 "very, very much," but that "it hasn’t sold as well" as either Microsoft or AT&T would like. The exec did express some optimism for WP7's future, though, saying that he thinks the Mango update will make WP7 much better.
During the same interview, de la Vega was also asked about Apple's desire for a SIM card that's smaller than the ones currently on the market. Although he didn't mention Apple explicitly, the CEO did say that AT&T is working to create a smaller SIM and that shrinking the size of the SIM is a "no-brainer."
Some have suspected that the reason that Microsoft hasn't been totally forthcoming about the number of Windows Phone 7 devices sold to consumers is because demand hasn't been as high as the folks in Redmond would like, and that increasingly seems to be the case. That's kind of disappointing considering the work that Microsoft put into creating a brand new mobile OS, but it's definitely too early to count WP7 out of the race. How do you all think Windows Phone 7 will fare going forward? Will the arrival of Mango spur sales of WP7 devices?
