After Nokia and Microsoft came clean on their future partnership, which will see the latter company's Windows Phone 7 on Nokia hardware, initial rumors regarding Nokia's ability to customize the mobile operating system popped up. PhoneScoop managed to run into Board Member and Nokia Executive Niklas Savander, and he straightened some details out. Nokia will be able to customize anything they want, but the company says that they will not make changes in the software that will prevent customers from receiving updates from Microsoft.
Savander said that there will be high-level customizations that will still allow for easy software updates from Microsoft, and a second kind of customization: changes that are deep into the fold of Windows Phone 7, which can actually be used by competing manufacturers if they so choose. It will be interesting to see the alterations that Nokia adds to Windows Phone 7, especially when it comes to Ovi Maps and other services of that brand. But it's good to hear that the company is going to go out of their way to make sure that software updates are still available for customers in the future. Would they have done the same thing if they went with RIM's BlackBerry OS instead?
