Sony Ericsson's got the W-Series Walkman phones, the K-Series Cybershot phones, and the P-series smartphones. So what would they call a line of Playstation-branded gaming phones? We might find out come Christmas time. Thing is, it's unclear if that's Christmas 2007 or 2008 or some other Christmas time down the road.
Confused? So am I. Peter Ahnegard, the head honcho of gaming at Sony Ericsson, told Pocket Gamer that while current high-end SE handsets like the P1 and W960 have the hardware to provide a PSP-esque gaming experience, a Playstation Phone is, "obviously something that we're looking at but right now I can't really comment. Before Christmas, certainly... but exactly which Christmas I can't confirm!"
The playful (ahem) Mr. Ahnegard said some interesting things about the future of handset gaming, and the interesting potential of connected gaming and GPS-aware gaming on mobile phones. Personally, I really like the idea of mobile games as extensions of console titles - a concept that Ahnegard described in the interview.
And as for the handsets themselves? "In two years I'd expect to see something like a Pentium 2 1GHz processor and memory of 60Gb in your handset," Ahnegard speculated. "We will also see more 3D hardware acceleration with dual-purpose chipsets that enhance gaming and streaming video." That's just crazy. Entirely realistic, but crazy nonetheless.
