HTC's DROID Eris, along with Motorola's DROID, was one of the first Android phones on Verizon's network. Unlike the DROID, however, the DROID Eris will not be upgraded to Android 2.2. Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney confirmed the news to ComputerWorld, saying, "We have other options in Android devices, so this is part of the normal evolution of our portfolio." The DROID Eris received an update to Android 2.1 in May and was discontinued by Verizon in June.
Considering how long the DROID Eris has been around, it's not surprising that the handset won't be updated any further than Android 2.1. The same thing might have happened to the original DROID, too, if it hadn't been such a huge success. At least the Eris got updated to Eclair, unlike the Motorola DEVOUR, which will forever be stuck at Android 1.6. Plus, the Android hacking community is always growing and innovating, and I'm sure that there will be some new ROMs and other hacks made available to Eris owners in the future. What do you think of the whole situation, DROID Eris owners?
