Apple has made another big acquisition.
The Cupertino company has acquired NextVR, which provides content for virtual reality headsets. Apple confirmed the acquisition to Bloomberg.
Meanwhile, NextVR has said that it's "heading in a new direction" in a statement on its website. "Thank you to our partners and fans around the world for the role you played in building this awesome platform for sports, music and entertainment experiences in Virtual Reality."
Unsurprisingly, Apple isn't saying anything about what is plans are or why it's acquiring NextVR. NextVR has experience with showing sports in virtual reality, including striking deals with leagues like the MLB, and it's also got experience in live streaming VR content.
Because of what NextVR had done before it was acquired, it seems likely that Apple will use this acquisition to bolster its augmented reality and virtual reality efforts. Not only does Apple already dabble in AR content, but rumors say the company could be working on its own AR and VR hardware, and NextVR's expertise could come in handy on all of those projects.
