For a few years there, we regularly got rugged Active versions of Samsung's Galaxy S flagships. That changed last year when there was no Galaxy S9 Active, but it looks like Samsung's got a new toughened phone for us in 2019.

Images of a new Samsung Galaxy Active phone have leaked out, showing an Android phone with a thick case and textured buttons. The phone has AT&T branding in its status bar, suggesting it'll be sold by the big blue carrier just like previous Galaxy S Active phones, and the date on the home screen is set to August 9.

This phone is said to carry the model number G889A, and a device identified as the "SM-G889A" passed through the FCC less than one month ago, suggesting that a launch at AT&T could be imminent.

A rugged Samsung phone that was thought to be a Galaxy S9 Active was actually spotted at MWC 2019 back in February, and it looks a whole lot like the mystery Galaxy S Active phone for AT&T that's being leaked today. The purported Galaxy S9 Active had a 5.2-inch 2560x1440 display, 12.2MP rear and 8MP front cameras, a rear fingerprint reader, and a 4500mAh battery, and so it's possible that those could be the specs for this AT&T-bound Galaxy S Active, too.

While they're probably not quite as popular as the flagship Galaxy S phones, it's been nice to see Samsung offer rugged Galaxy S Active phones for consumers who want a high-end phone but also need a rugged device that can stand up to some abuse without needing a big case. That's why it was kind of a bummer to not see a Galaxy S9 Active last year. With that August 9 date on this mystery Galaxy S Active phone's screen, though, the Active line of Samsung phones could return as soon as next week.
