Tracfone is the low-cost cell phone king!

Posted on: July 27th, 2010 by Samuel Turner

The good: Keep phone active for as little as $7 a month.Great coast-to-coast network coverage. No-nonsense service with zero hidden fees. service charges etc.The bad: Very basic handsets - no smartphones. Not for high usage persons.Summary: Tracfone is still the cheapest way to keep a cell phone active and in minutes in the States. Their coverage is still the best out of all the prepaid carriers. This phone will start to get expensive if you use hundreds of minutes per month but for occasional users or those wanting to keep an emergency phone this is the best way to do it.

Good for occasional use - cheap way to keep a cell

Posted on: July 26th, 2010 by Sasha Cohen

The good: Very cheap. Great national coverage. Roaming is a pleasure. The bad: Customer service can be difficult. Plain phones.Summary: At $7 a month this is still the cheapest way to own a phone in the States. When you get excellent coverage and enough minutes (for occasional users) then your $7 buys you a lot of value. I own a smartphone on one of the major carriers and keep a Tracfone for emergencies and I've used the Tracfone more than once in places where my smartphone does not have any bars.

No bars in my apartment

Posted on: July 12th, 2010 by Phyllis Gallo

The good: Good payment planGood phone - web, text, cameraThe bad: No bars in my apartment in New York City. Works just fine in Puerto Rico. Go figure.Summary: In order not to loose bars, I call my voicemail before I get in the elevator in my apartment. When I get in my apartment, then I end the call. If I don't do this, I will not have bars and I will have to go outside to the corner to get bars. The bars won't even come back if I sit on my terrace. This phone - Motorola Wg - works fine in Puerto Rico, Sea Bright, New Jersey and anywhere else except in my summer rental in Montauk, New York. Once again - no bars unless I climb up on the roof.

Terrible Service

Posted on: July 3rd, 2010 by T Weed

The good: Cheap service if you don't use the phone muchThe bad: Don't expect help from customer service for any problem.Summary: I had a trac phone and purchased a new replacement. I had problems activating my old number to the new phone. After being on the phone for an hour with customer service, the guy deactivated my old phone and told me to check the new phone in an hour and call back if it didn't work. It didn't. I called back the following evening and got a lady that told me it could take 72 hours to activate. I waited 72 hours and called back again. I told them to just forget the new phone and reactivate my old phone. They said they can't since it was deactivated. Now I have to wait for a new SIM card that might show up in 5-7 working days. If it doesn't show, I'm to call them back again. I've already been on the phone with them for 3 hours...that's enough.

customer service incompetence

Posted on: July 1st, 2010 by William Gray

The good: able to contact after lengthy wait on holdThe bad: agents keep you waiting while they try to learn how to fix your problemSummary: I spoke with 3 different "agents", each one had "technical difficuties" with their computer application that requuired they reboot their computers before they could help me. Lengthy periods on hold followed by a narrative of asking for you to wait while they enter the data, or access my account, or contact their supervisor. I think they dawdle purposely to generate enough frustration so you will give up on them. Then they could always say "we tried to help, but they hung up on us". I am surprised they didn't offer me some free minutes to compensate me for all the minutes I wasted in calls required to troubleshoot my account.

Terrible

Posted on: June 30th, 2010 by Anonymous

The good: uh.. nothingThe bad: everythingSummary: tracfone may be cheap, but that definately doesnt make it reliable or a good deal. sure, tracfone may be perfect for people who do not use their cellphones a lot, but for others, it is the worst possible way to go. i (unfortunately) own a tracfone, and i cannot get reliable service almost anywhere - not even at my own house. i will try to send a text message, only to have my minutes wasted when the service becomes spontaneously unavailable. if you have a choice when choosing your cell phone carrier, do notttttt choose tracfone - it is not worth it, no matter how cheap.

Long time customer

Posted on: June 20th, 2010 by Marsha Priesmeyer

The good: Phones and service very inexpensive. Excellent coverage; no dropped calls. Great for those who don't use phones often. The bad: No phone with qwerty keyboard.Summary: The best thing about Tracfone is that $20.00 gets you three months of service. You get 60 minutes (or 120 if you have a phone with double minutes). For infrequent users, this is plenty. Net 10 is good but $20.00 only gets you one month of service. ($15.00 if you buy one of their plans that add automatically each month.) Net 10 has some newer phones, but I stay with Tracfone because I can get ample minutes for about $7.00 per month. That's hard to beat.As for customer service, it can be very frustrating. But if you read reviews of all companies--even the ones with lots of features and fancy plans--you will find dissatisfied customers there as well. I just consider that it is a trade-off. I may have an occasional problem but it don't pay much.I used to have trouble adding minutes to the first Tracfone I had and would have to call customer service every time and key in long numbers, but when I got another phone that went away and I could easily do it online. Then I had a Net 10 phone for awhile. I went back to Tracfone but kept Net 10's phone number. I had a problem with that because when I typed info to change number, I made a typo. It did take a few days and many calls to get that fixed.

Extremely poor and unorganized technical support

Posted on: June 19th, 2010 by Anonymous

Purchased telephone and spent 7 days, at least eight telephone calls, and so far at least 90 minutes on hold during these various calls. So far, unable to load minutes, unable to use phone, and for some unfathomable reason, no telephone number. Apparently this problem is "under advisement" by the supervisors in the technical support department. They cannot seem to find a way to issue me a telephone number and let me load minutes onto the phone. I have variously been promised resolution in anywhere from four to 24 hours. Now it is a week later with no ability to use the phone and no offer for a refund either. My previous phone with TracFone was problem-free. This time has been nothing but grief and no solution in sight. My complaints have gone nowhere. They continuously thank me for my business, but no one seems to have any idea how to simply GET ME A PHONE NUMBER and let me load minutes.

Good value

Posted on: June 13th, 2010 by M Cohen

The good: Low costNo contractNo surprise chargesThe bad: Not sexyLooked down onold phonesSummary: I like my Tracfone. I don't need to make many calls but I need to be available to receive them. I can keep my Trackfone active for 20 every three months, which is amazing.People I know poke fun at me, but they can spend their money on a "groovy" new phone. I have a $10 Tracefone that does what I need to do.
