It's official: The OnePlus 8 series is getting wireless charging support.
OnePlus confirmed today that the OnePlus 8 series will support Warp Charge 30 Wireless, the company's new wireless charging tech. Able to wirelessly output power at up to 30W, this OnePlus wireless charger can get your phone from 1% to 50% in 30 minutes.
Separately, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has told The Verge that wireless charging will be available on the company's next "ultraflagship" phone, which is likely the OnePlus 8 Pro. It's unclear if the regular OnePlus 8 will support it, too, but rumors have suggested that wireless charging could be exclusive to the Pro model.
Also confirmed today is that OnePlus's wireless charging tech supports the Qi standard. This means that the OnePlus 8 series will be compatible with any regular Qi wireless charging, though you'll only get slower 5W charging speeds. If you've got a Qi wireless charging that supports a 10W EPP standard, you'll be able to get 10W charging speeds.
OnePlus went on to detail its Warp Charge 30 Wireless tech a bit more today. The wireless charger features a "highly effective charge pump" with an efficiency of 97% to minimize the amount of energy converted to heat. What's more, the charger includes an isolated charge pump that can kill the charging when it detects abnormal currents and voltages.
The wireless charger being made by OnePlus, teased in an image at the top of this post, will have a fan to help keep things cool while charging the phone. It could as loud as 30db, but OnePlus CEO Pete Lau says there will be a "night mode" option that'll keep the fan off at night while you sleep but also reduce charging speeds.
Finally, Lau touched a bit on the price of the OnePlus wireless charger. Lau didn't give an exact figure, but he did say that "The cost of materials is certainly higher than what we could expect for most traditional Qi chargers," but he adds that OnePlus has done what it can to make the price "as reasonable as possible."
Wireless charging has become a must-have feature for many folks when shopping for a new phone, so it's great to see OnePlus finally adopting it. The company has long said that wireless charging is inferior to wired charging and that it'd only adopt wireless charging that could match its wired charging speeds. With Warp Charge 30W Wireless, it looks like it's finally done that.
