Get ready, Instagram users, because ads are about to begin appearing in another part of your app.
Instagram today confirmed that it's bringing ads to the Explore section of its app. The Explore section is where you'll see photos and videos that you may be interested in from accounts that you don't currently follow. You can access it by tapping the magnifying glass at the bottom of your Instagram app.
Ads will roll out to Instagram's Explore section "slowly and thoughtfully in the coming months." After tapping on a photo or video in the Explore section, you may begin to see ads when you're browsing through photos, similar to your main feed.
As for why it's introducing ads to the Explore section, Instagram says that 80 percent of users follow a business on Instagram and that Explore "can help them find the next business or product they might love." The company adds that advertisers can use this as "an opportunity to be part of what's culturally relevant and trending while reaching new audiences who are looking to discover something new."
Instagram already places ads in your main feed and in your Stories, so it's kind of surprising that it took this long for ads to show up in the Explore section, too. Now we know they're coming, and while that may be a bummer to some users, Instagram is a business that will continue to look for ways to grow, and placing ads in Explore is one way to try and do that.
