Today Samsung hosted its latest Galaxy event, and it revealed a new phone with an interesting camera mechanism.
The Samsung Galaxy A80 features a triple rear camera setup that flips around to also work as front-facing cameras. When you select selfie mode in the Galaxy A80's camera app, the three cameras automatically pop up from the back of the phone and rotate around. This enables the Galaxy A80's 6.7-inch 2400x1080 Super AMOLED display to avoid having a notch or hole-punch.
Included in that triple camera setup is a 48MP main snapper with f/2.0 aperture, an 8MP ultra wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture and 123-degree field of view, and a 3D depth camera. Samsung has also included a Super Steady feature that'll reduce video shake, a Scene Optimizer that'll recognize and enhance up to 30 scenes, and a Flaw Detection feature that'll identify glitches before you capture a photo to help ensure you get the perfect shot.
Inside the Galaxy A80 is an octa-core processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of built-in storage. There's a 3700mAh battery along with 25W fast charging support, too, and an in-display fingerprint sensor for added security. The Galaxy A80 comes preloaded with Android 9.0 Pie.
The Galaxy A80's rotating triple camera setup is a neat-looking way to avoid the notch or hole-punch, letting Samsung give the A80's display a cleaner, more edge-to-edge look. We've seen some phones with pop-up camera mechanisms in the past, but they typically have a dedicated front camera or two. With the Galaxy A80's rotating triple camera setup, your selfies can be captured with the rear cameras, which are typically of higher quality than a front-facing camera. Of course, the triple camera mechanism may also raise some concerns about the cameras being tied to a rotating hardware mechanism.
