Samsung isn't the only Android device maker announcing a new phone today with a unique pop-up camera mechanism.
The Oppo Reno features a wedge-shaped pop-up selfie camera mechanism. It includes the 16MP front-facing camera, a front flash, an earpiece, and a flash for the rear cameras. Oppo says that the whole mechanism can pop up in 0.8 seconds.
Of course, with a sliding mechanism like this, there are often concerns that it could break or wear out, but Oppo says that it's tested the Reno's mechanism to work more than 200,000 times. Oppo has also built in a fall protection that it says will detect when the Reno is falling and automatically retract the sliding camera mechanism to protect it from damage.
There are actually two versions of the Oppo Reno coming to market. The higher-end model boasts a triple rear camera setup that includes an 8MP super wide angle camera with a 120-degree field of view and a 10x hybrid optical zoom. This snapper's also got dual OIS for anti-shake and smart laser focus. There's a 13MP telephoto camera on the Oppo Reno, too, and a 48MP main camera with OIS, an f/1.7 aperture, and a Sony IMX586 lens.
The other Oppo Reno model opts for a dual rear camera setup. It's got the same 48MP main sensor as the other Reno, but the other cameras and 10x hybrid zoom for a 5MP depth of field camera.
There are a few other differences between these Oppo Reno models that are worth noting. The 10x zoom version has a 6.6-inch 2340x1080 AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 855 processor, microSD card slot, and a 4065mAh battery. Meanwhile, the other version has a smaller 6.4-inch 2340x1080 AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 710 processor, no microSD slot, and a slightly smaller 3765mAh battery.
Both versions of the Oppo Reno are available with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage as well as 6GB/256GB and 8GB/256GB models. They've also both got dual SIM slots, NFC, and in-display fingerprint sensors. Oppo is preloading both phones with Android 9 Pie running below its custom ColorOS 6 user interface.
When it comes to pricing, the Oppo Reno with 10x zoom will start at 3999 yuan ($595 USD) while the smaller model will start at 2999 yuan ($447 USD).
