The Galaxy Fold isn't launching for another month and a half or so, but that hasn't stopped Samsung from making plans for more foldable phones.
Samsung is reportedly working on two more foldable smartphones. The first is a clamshell design that folds vertically, according to Bloomberg, while the second folds away from the user like the Huawei Mate X.
The clamshell model will be the first of the two to debut, with Samsung said to be targeting a reveal for later in 2019 or early 2020. The device is said to have an extra screen on the outside, but Samsung may remove it depending on how consumers react to the outer display on the Galaxy Fold. Also rumored to be included is an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The outward folding phone already exists as a prototype because it was considered as Samsung's first foldable. It'll come sometime after the clamshell model, though. Today's report says that it'll be thinner since it has no outer display and could also have an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Foldable phones are still a very new product category, and no one knows what design will catch on with consumers, if any does at all. Because of that, it's no surprise to hear that Samsung is experimenting with two more foldables with designs different from the Galaxy Fold. Motorola is reportedly cooking up a foldable phone with a clamshell design like the old-school RAZR and Huawei has the Mate X, so if one of those models sells better than the Galaxy Fold, Samsung could respond with one of these rumored foldables that it's got in the works.
Speaking of the Galaxy Fold, today's report also mentions that Samsung is working to improve the durability of the Galaxy Fold's display. It's said that Samsung is working to eliminate a crease that appears on the display after it's been folded about 10,000 times. The company is considering offering free screen replacements after launching the Galaxy Fold.
