Remember the Meizu Zero, that holeless phone with no buttons or speaker? It's Indiegogo campaign has now come to an end, and unfortunately, there's no good news to share.
The Meizu Zero's Indiegogo campaign raised less than half of its $100,000 goal, bringing in just $45,998. The campaign offered two models, a $1,299 regular model and a $2,999 "Pioneering Unit", and in total Meizu ended up with just 29 supporters for its crowdfunding campaign.
Interestingly, Meizo CEO Jack Wong says that the Meizo Zero was never intended to be a mass-produced phone, but instead was just a stunt carried out by Meizu's marketing department. "This crowdfunding is carried out by the marketing department," he said in a Meizu forum. "The non-porous mobile phone is only a pre-research project of the development department. We never intended to mass-produce this project."
The Meizu Zero was interesting because it claimed to be the world's first holeless phone. The device used an in-screen sound technology to output audio since it had no speaker, a "Virtual Side Button" for powering the phone on and off and controlling the volume, and Qi wireless charging since there was no charging port. Unfortunately, it's $1,299 price tag probably turned a lot of folks off, especially since the phone came equipped with last year's Snapdragon 845 processor.
