Samsung's newest device will help you keep track of the important stuff.
The new Samsung SmartThings tracker is now official. The small device comes with a loop so that you can attach it to a bag, a set of keys, a pet collar, and more. You can then track the device in real-time using the SmartThings app on Android and iOS. The SmartThings tracker can be used to send a notification to the app, too, so that a person using the tracker can let their family know where they're at.
Another useful feature of the SmartThings tracker is geofencing. Using the app, you can set up a zone, and the SmartThings tracker will send you an alert when it exits or enters the zone. The device functions as a proximity sensor for smart home devices, too, so you can have your lights turn on when you get close to home.
The body of the Samsung SmartThings tracker is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance, and the battery inside can last up to a week on a single charge. Also included is LTE-M connectivity, which Samsung boasts has a greater range than Bluetooth and offers better tracking when the device is indoors or below street level.
The Samsung SmartThings tracker will be available from AT&T starting on September 14th for $99. Service is included for the first 12 months, but after that, you'll need to pay $5 per month or $50 per year for AT&T service. Verizon will launch the SmartThings tracker later this year.
Samsung's SmartThings isn't the first tracking device on the market, but its LTE-M connectivity makes it appealing. Some other trackers use Bluetooth for their connection to your phone, but the range of LTE-M means that you should be able to use the SmartThings tracker nationwide, so long as your carrier has the LTE-M network for it.
