Google today launched a new product in its online store, but some may find that it's not quite as exciting as a new smartphone or laptop.
Google has quietly rolled out a new USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter. This new version is priced at $12, a few bucks more than the old version that Google sold.
So what's the difference? There are a couple of changes, actually. First is that this new USB-C to 3.5mm adapter is a bit smaller, measuring in at 3.67 in (93.2 mm) long, 0.46 in (11.6mm) wide, and 0.3 in (7.6 mm) tall with a weight of 0.17 oz (4.9 g). To compare, the old version is 3.8 in (96.0 mm) long, 0.5 in (12.2 mm) wide, and 0.3 in (8.3mm) tall with a weight of 0.2 oz (5.3 g).
The updated USB-C to 3.5mm adapter also provides increased music playback time and reduced plug-in latency with Pixel phones, says Google. Specifically, it offers 38 percent more playback time and has a 53 percent improvement on plug-in latency than the previous adapter. Google also says that the adapter "works best on Pixel and other devices running Android P or higher".
This new USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter looks like a nice little improvement over the previous version. That said, the upgrades that it does offer don't seem so great that anyone with the old model should hurry to buy the new version, so don't fret too much if you're currently using Google's previous adapter.
