Virtual reality headsets can do some pretty nifty things, like immersing you in a game world or letting you watch a movie in a virtual movie theater. One feature you may not immediately associate with VR is a web browser, but that’s exactly what Samsung has launched.
Samsung is releasing a web browser optimized for its Gear VR headset today, December 2. The browser will be available in the Oculus Store and it’ll support many of the features that you’d expect from a browser. There’s voice recognition and even an on-screen keyboard, but because you’re wearing the VR headset on your face, there’s also a Gaze Mode that’ll let you select menus by looking at them. There’s support for bookmarks and a tab manager, HTML5 video, and 360-degree and 3D video, too.
Browsing the web on a VR headset may sound a bit strange, but this does give you another thing to do with your Gear VR. It also means that you can just keep your Gear VR on to browse your favorite sites while taking breaks from doing other virtual reality activities.
