Last year saw Google acquire music streaming service Songza, and then Google has been implementing Songza’s features into Google Play Music. Songza has been living alongside Google Play Music this whole time, but that’s going to change next month.
Songza has announced that it’ll shut down on January 31, 2016, so that the people working on Songza can focus on one product rather than two. If you’re a longtime Songza user, you’ll be happy to learn that the Songza app will let you migrate your account to Google Play Music, including all of your favorited stations and thumbs-upped songs.
Looking ahead, Songza’s co-founders say that they plan on working on the “intersection of expert curation and algorithmic optimization” of Google Play Music. The app is also expected to gain a family plan and podcast support in the near future.
As I mentioned before, Google has been integrating Songza’s features into Google Play Music for a while. Now its free ad-supported radio and curated playlists are available in the US and Canada, and so it makes sense for Songza to finally shut down. Unfortunately for Windows phone users, there's no Google Play Music app on Microsoft's mobile platform yet, so those folks will have to find another music streaming service to use.
