In the days following the debut of the HTC One A9, lots of folks drew comparisons between the design of HTC’s new phone and Apple’s iPhone 6/6s. Now the HTC-Apple talk is continuing with a new HTC ad.
HTC has posted a commercial for the One A9 that depicts everyone wearing the same clothes, making the same motions, and generally just being part of the crowd. That is, save for one parkouring guy with an HTC One A9. At one point in the video, One A9 Guy jumps onto a dinner table — at which many mannequins are seated — and runs across it, kicking a pile of white apples in the process. One A9 Guy’s actions end up freeing a handful of other folks from their repeated actions, and the end of the ad shows the group running free and parkouring through a forest.
If it isn’t clear from watching the ad, HTC is taking a few shots at Apple in the clip. Not only does it borrow a bit from Apple’s own “1984” commercial with its similarly-dressed public, but there’s the whole scene that depicts dummies sitting at a table. And then there’s One A9 Guy kicking a pile of white apples.
When it comes to the phone itself, HTC’s new ad spot offers just a few quick glimpses at the One A9 until we reach the end and get a clear look at its front and rear. There are a few callouts to the One A9’s features throughout the ad, including its metal body, 13-megapixel camera, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Even with those mentions sprinkled through the ad, though, I feel like HTC maybe should’ve focused more on showing off the One A9 itself rather than urging people to stop conforming and taking subtle shots at Apple.
