There are a lot of differences between iOS and Android. One of them is that while Android devices can be powered by processors designed by many different companies, iOS hardware always has an Apple-designed chipset. However, a new report suggests that Google wants to emulate Apple in this respect.
Sources speaking to The Information say that Google has met with processor makers about designing chips for Android alongside the actual chip maker. The talks reportedly took place this fall, but the report doesn’t mention which processor makers Google spoke with.
The goal of Google’s desire to design Android chips is that it would enable Google to build cutting edge features right into Android. Some examples given include augmented and virtual reality and some other features that would benefit from hardware and software that is closely integrated.
It remains to be seen if Google actually will end up designing Android processors with a chipset maker, but it’d be interesting to see what would happen if it did. Which chipset makers would Google partner with? Would the other, non-partner chipset makers be upset? What kind of features would Google add to Android that would require its specially designed chips? For now, we can only speculate.
