Last month, Apple touted that there were more than 3,500 apps available for the Apple Watch at the time of the device’s launch. It’s doubtful that any of them were a web browser, but one developer has apparently now gotten a browser on Apple’s smartwatch.
Comex, who’s well-known for his past jailbreak efforts, has gotten a web browser running on the Apple Watch. The dev posted a brief video showing the browser on Google.com and also allowing the user to highlight a bit of text to copy or define it, similar to how iOS works. Obviously having a web browser on a tiny screen that’s strapped to your wrist isn’t exactly practical, but that’s not really the main draw of the Apple Watch browser. What makes it interesting is that Comex was able to somehow hack a web browser onto the Watch, when the only official way to get third-party apps onto the device is with a a companion iPhone app from the App Store. Comex isn’t saying exactly how the hack works, so for now we’ll just have to watch this brief demo of the web browser in action and see what else Comex comes up with.
