Remember that Google Workshop leak from 2014 that claimed that Google may let people create custom cases for their Nexus phones? We haven’t heard much about the service since then, but today — eight months later — a little leak has surfaced that may add support to the original rumor.
Last night, a Google employee took to Google+ to share an image of a Nexus 6 in a case covered in a Google Maps image, complete with the caption “Google Maps custom cases.” The post was deleted shortly thereafter, but because this is the Internet, it was saved for all to see.
Android Police notes that Google forbids Maps images from being used on items that will be resold, like t-shirts and mugs. It seems like a phone case would fall into that category too, but hey, there’s no one stopping Google from making its own Google Maps cases. And the original Google Workshop leak predicted a feature just like this case called “MapMe” that would let you design a custom case with a location and then tweak that map’s colors and more.
There’s still no word on when Google Workshop might launch or if it’s even still in the works, but the appearance of this Nexus 6 case seems to suggest that a launch may not be too far off.
