Rumors claiming that the iPhone 6 will sport a sapphire display have been floating around for months now, but today the possibility of a sapphire-clad iPhone 6 got a boost in support from a new report.
The Wall Street Journal claims that Apple is producing sapphire displays for both the iPhone 6 and its upcoming wearable at a factory in Arizona. Interestingly, the WSJ says that Apple is “considering using sapphire screens in more-expensive models of the two new, larger iPhones it plans to debut this fall.”
Apple typically offers different storage capacities with its iPhones to offer a range of prices. This last year saw the company offer a cheaper iPhone 5c made of plastic and a metal iPhone 5s with its typical pricing, so it’s possible that we could see a similar strategy but with glass and sapphire models this year. It’s also been suggested that Apple could simply absorb the added cost to help use sapphire displays as a way to make the iPhone stand out from other smartphones on the market.
Meanwhile, the inclusion of a sapphire display on Apple’s wearable sounds like a nice addition. Smartwatches and other wristwear are always out and susceptible to collision with other objects, so a sapphire display could help to protect Apple’s wearable from the outside world better than a glass screen would.
