When you go outside, around people, do you tend to check out which phone they're using? I do. All the time. I try to figure out which iPhone they're using, or which Galaxy S model they've adopted as their daily driver. I try to find devices, too. I actively look for Sony-branded handsets out there in the wild, or get a glimpse of an HTC One family member.
It took me a long time to ever see an iPhone 5c out there in the wild. I've been told they're "everywhere," and I'm sure they are in some places. But, I've actually only seen about four or five since the device's launch. And that's being gracious on the count.
The same can be said for quite a few devices, though. I've never actually seen a recently launched Sony handset in the wild. That's obviously due in large part because the carriers here aren't keen on carrying them, but with a growing number of people buying unlocked handsets to keep unlimited data plans, I always hope I'll see at least one.
At the same time, I'm always super surprised when I see a Moto X out there. I've seen more of those than the iPhone 5c, actually, and that's impressive to me. Motorola has an excellent device with their hero handset of 2013, so it will be interesting to see how they capitalize on that, and make it better, with the X+1.
It's been a long time since I've seen a BlackBerry.
I don't feel like it's been that long since I said I was rooting for the underdog (but it has been), and I'm not sure that I've actually got the same outlook anymore. I don't want to see them fail -- not at all. I think I've just realized that the chances of them making a comeback are few and far between. Not necessarily impossible, I guess, but, you get the idea.
And I'm reminded of this the longer I go without seeing a BlackBerry in the wild. More than that, I look at devices like the Passport, which just saw a promo video released for it, and I can't help but wonder if this is the device that's going to restart the BlackBerry love. Or not. We'll find out in the months after September, after the handset launches.
Though, it's hard to ignore that BlackBerry may have picked the worst month imaginable to launch anything. You've got Samsung and Apple that generally dominate the month, and they plan to this September all over again. But now you've also got Motorola in there, too, for good measure.
September is going to be a crazy month for smartphones. Can BlackBerry make any waves? We'll have to wait and find out.
