Verizon has quietly been enhancing its 4G LTE network with AWS spectrum since last year in an effort to boost the capacity and speed of its service. Now it appears that the Big Red carrier may have rolled out enough AWS coverage to be ready for a major consumer-focused campaign to highlights its improved coverage.
An image leaked by Droid-Life suggests that Verizon will officially brand its AWS spectrum as “XLTE” on May 19. Verizon has previously said that devices equipped with support for this AWS spectrum will be able to utilize the enhanced coverage. Several devices already include that support, such as the iPhone 5s and Galaxy S 4, and its said that updates to enable AWS connectivity will be released to the Galaxy S5 and One (M8).
This “XLTE” branding doesn’t make much of a difference to us mobile addicts, as it’s not like this new brand will suddenly make the AWS service any better. What it will do is give Verizon a way to tell consumers about an improved coverage in a way that most regular folks should be able to understand. Using the term “AWS” along with “4G” and “LTE” could be confusing, but the term “XLTE” suggests that the service is an upgraded version of the regular LTE service.
