T-Mobile has made quite a few big moves in the past several months, including the launch of its Simple Starter plan, Operation Tablet Freedom and the end of overage fees. Today information on T-Mobile’s next major action have leaked, and this time around the big magenta carrier is teaming up with another company to make its move.
An image leaked by TmoNews suggests that T-Mobile may be planning to team up with Spanish broadcast network Univision to launch a new MVNO known as “Univision Mobile.” The photo shows a Univision Mobile SIM kit that says that its service is offered by T-Mobile.
In addition to the T-Mobile reference, the SIM kit packaging includes some other tidbits of info related to the kit itself. It says that the SIM will work with any unlocked GSM phone, that the kit contains standard and microSIM cards and that after activating the card, users will need to purchase additional minutes.
The source of today’s leak says that T-Mobile may be planning to announce its Univision partnership on May 19. We’ll have to wait until then before we know whether or not this leak is legit, but TmoNews points out that it this agreement could make sense for T-Mobile.
The site points to a Forbes report that explains that the U.S. Hispanic market has extremely strong buying power and that they tend to build brand loyalty with an entity that represents them and their cultural identity. This is exactly what Univision does, and so a Univision Mobile service could be extremely attractive to Hispanic consumers. With Univision’s network, the MVNO could get some nice advertising, which could really help to build T-Mo’s customer base.
