Rumors of an Amazon smartphone have been popping up fairly frequently over the past couple of years, and today we’ve got one more report to add to the list.
According to sources speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is prepping a smartphone that it plans to announce by the end of June and begin shipping by the end of September. The device will reportedly be able to display 3D images without requiring the user to wear special glasses. This will be accomplished using retina-tracking technology that’ll be embedded in four front-facing cameras or speakers, making images on the display appear to be in 3D.
As I mentioned before, the rumor mill has been claiming that an Amazon smartphone is in the works for quite a while. Such a device won’t be official until Amazon makes it so, but considering how many times we’ve heard reports like this one, it’s starting to feel like Amazon has to have some sort of handset kicking around in its labs. What will be interesting is seeing how the device’s rumored 3D feature will work and if Amazon can pull off such a feature and actually make it look good.
