Google has expanded its Glass Explorer program multiple times, but invitations to join the group can be somewhat hard to come by. That may change soon, though, as newly-leaked documents have revealed that Google may briefly allow anyone to become a Glass Explorer in the near future.
According to a report from The Verge, Google is planning to open its Glass Explorer program to everyone in the U.S. for a limited period of time. This will allow anyone that wants to drop $1,500 on Google Glass will be able to do so. Buyers will also reportedly receive a free sunglass shade or prescription frame.
There’s no word yet on exactly when the program will be opened up to everyone or how long it’ll stay that way. However, the leaked docs suggest that an announcement could be made as soon as April 15.
The Glass Explorer program has been a great way for Google to get its eyewear out in the wild and have regular folks test it in a number of scenarios. Opening the program up to everyone will help to expand that testing and get Google ready for the public launch of Glass, which is expected to take place later this year.

UPDATE: Google has confirmed that anyone in the U.S. will be able to become a Glass Explorer on Tuesday, April 15. Sales will begin at 6:00 a.m. PDT/9:00 a.m. EDT, and the units will be priced at $1,500 plus tax and include a free shade or frame. Google says that there will be a limited number of openings, so you’d best get up early.
