If you have spent any time with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, then you already know that Samsung continues to create devices that are intended to make our daily easier. At the end of the day, though, were always seems to be met with one question: How long will my phone's battery last today? Mugen Power, a company whose sole focus is battery life, offers solutions for all of today's top mobile devices.
When I had the opportunity to test out Mugen's extended battery for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, I was excited to see not only how long the Note 3 would last with the larger battery pack, but also how it would affect the phone's form factor. After all, I don't just want my phone to work all day long, I also need it to look good and fit in my pocket.
With these concerns in mind, I began my journey with Mugen Power's Samsung Galaxy Note 3 extended battery pack. The standard battery issued with the Note 3 is in itself a fairly respectable 3200mAh rechargeable unit, which is larger than the the majority of devices on the market today. Mugen Power's extended battery for the Note 3 is more than double that size, coming in at an impressive 6500mAh. That's nice because battery life will always be an issue for a phone with the size and feature set of the Note 3.
Battery life results will always vary from person to person. I believe that the goal for today's smartphones should be to have a battery life that lasts for a single charge from the time I leave the house to the time I lay down for bed. Once I had the Mugen Power extended battery sitting at a full charge, I disconnected the phone from its charger and had some fun doodling, playing games, streaming music, checking my Facebook and email and watching shows on Netflix. The results were impressive. With what I consider heavy use, I was able to stretch my battery for a day and a half.
If you're worried about how the battery pack will affect the look of your Note 3, you will only run into issues if you use a case on your device. The 6500mAh battery is nearly double the size of the standard Note 3 battery, so the default back for the device will no longer fit. Mugen Power provides a new back that makes the phone about a quarter-inch thicker. While the new cover matches the look of the device and even includes a kickstand, you can't help but wish that it didn't add so much bulk to the device. The good news is that, while the added thickness of the Note 3 is noticeable, the extended battery doesn't add much to the phone's total weight.
Overall, I think that results justify the size of the Mugen Power extended battery for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. At a price tag of $99.50, it might not be a bad idea to pick one up.
The Wrap-up
The Good: Doubling the time between charges for one of the most popular phones on the market today is a great thing.
The Bad: Making such a big phone even thicker may be a concern for some users.
The Verdict: When I consider how long I went between charges while using Mugen Power's extended battery for the Note 3, I can easily overlook the added thickness that comes with using a larger battery pack. Those attached to a particular case may have a different opinion, but overall the solid battery performance and great looking back cover are what won me over during my experience with the Mugen Power extended battery.
