Verizon iPhone 5 owners may have noticed a carrier settings update hit their device recently, and while the update dialog box informs users how to install the update, it doesn't say exactly what the new settings are for. An Apple support page has revealed that the update, which brings the iPhone 5 up to version 13.1 of the Verizon carrier settings, includes a fix for an issue that could cause the device to use cellular data while connected to a Wi-Fi network. Verizon said in a statement sent to The Loop that customers won't be charged for data consumed due to this bug. The carrier's full statement:
“Under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Apple has a fix that is being delivered to Verizon customers right on their iPhone 5. Verizon Wireless customers will not be charged for any unwarranted cellular data usage.”
Any Verizon iPhone 5 users that have yet to receive this update can find it by going into Settings > General > About on their device and waiting for it to pop up there. This bug definitely sounds like one that could cause problems for Verizon customers on a tiered/shared data plan, so it's good to hear that Big Red won't be charging folks for any data consumed due to this issue.
