For just about anyone with even a passing interest in mobile tech, getting a phone upgrade is one of the most exciting times one can have after being locked into a contract for two years. Unfortunately for Verizon customers, upgrade time is going to be coming much later in the contract period after January 16th. As a newly-leaked Verizon training document reveals, Big Red is planning to "simplify" its upgrade policy on the 16th, making customers on two-year contracts wait until after the 20th month of the contract to be able to move to a new device at a subsidized price. Additionally, the New Every Two program will be getting the axe as customers upgrade and sign up for new contracts. The only bit of good news here is that one-year contracts remain unaffected.
Considering how quickly phones become outdated in this ever-evolving world, this is bad news for Verizon customers that have been enjoying the ability to upgrade on a yearly basis. If you need to have the latest and greatest, it's time to start examining either a one-year contract or, if you can afford it, buying phones outright or through places like CraigsList and eBay. Both options are going to be a bit more expensive than your usual two-year subsidized price, but at least you'll be able to keep up with new tech as its released.
