Last year Google launched Nest Wifi as its new mesh router offering, but it didn't eliminate the older Google Wifi that came before it. And in fact, that Google Wifi actually got a small update today.
Google Wifi today got a price cut, dropping its price down to $99.99 for a single unit or $199.99 for a three-pack (via Android Police). That's down from $129 and $299, respectively, so Google Wifi has gotten a significant price reduction.
The hardware of Google Wifi has changed slightly, too. Google says that 49% of the device's plastic weight is now made with recycled materials, and the Google logo on the top of the router has been updated slightly. On the bottom there's a barrel jack power adapter that replaces the USB-C port that the previous model used for power.
In terms of specs and features, the new Google Wifi is largely similar to the old model. It's got 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi supporting 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and each unit can cover up to 1500 square feet. Inside there's still an unspecified quad-core ARM processor plus 512MB of RAM and 4GB of eMMC storage. There are dual gigabit Ethernet ports on the Google Wifi, too.
By keeping the Google Wifi router around, Google is offering a lower cost mesh Wi-Fi alternative to its newer Nest Wifi routers. The Nest Wifi has a built-in speaker and Google Assistant, and each router can cover a wider area than Google Wifi, but Nest Wifi is pricier than Google Wifi, starting at $169 for a single Nest Wifi router or $269 for a router and point.
