Because we're so early into 5G's life, we're seeing a lot of mobile device makers launch their very first 5G smartphones lately. The latest company to intro its first 5G phone is Sony.
The Xperia 1 II (pronounced Xperia 1 Mark Two) is powered by a Snapdragon 865 SoC with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem. Unfortunately for those of us in the U.S., it appears that the Xperia 1 II will be a 4G-only device when it arrives stateside, but folks in Europe will get a 5G-enabled model when it launches there in late spring 2020.
Because this is a Xperia flagship, Sony is also placing a major focus on camera performance. There's a triple 12MP camera setup on the back of the Xperia 1 II, including a main sensor with 1/1.7-inch Exmor RS sensor to help gather more light for better image quality plus a 24mm focal length and f/1.7 aperture. There's a telephoto cam with 70mm focal length and f/2.4 aperture, too, and an ultra-wide cam with 16mm focal length, f/2.2 aperture, and 124-degree field of view.
Sony also touts that its Xperia 1 II is the first phone to support AF/AE 20fps burst shooting to help you capture moving objects, plus continuous AF/AE calculation at up to 60 times per second. There are pro controls to help you set ISO, white balance, and more, too, as well as support for outputting RAW files.
The display on the Xperia 1 II uses the tall 21:9 aspect ratio that we've seen on other recent Sony flagships, boasting a 6.5-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 3840x1644. There's an 8MP selfie cam at the top of the phone's face plus a side-mounted fingerprint reader, dedicated camera button, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Inside the Xperia 1 II's IP65/68 water resistant body is 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 4000mAh battery. USB PD fast charging is supported here, as is Qi wireless charging.
Sony isn't saying how much the Android 10-powered Xperia 1 II will cost when it arrives.
Also announced today is the Xperia 10 II. This "super mid-range" phone features its own 6-inch 21:9 OLED display and a triple rear camera setup that includes wide angle, ultra wide, and telephoto lenses.
The body of the Xperia 10 II is IP65/68 water and dust resistant, and it's packing a Snapdragon 665 processor, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Sony says the Xperia 10 II will launch in select markets in spring 2020.
Finally, Sony today teased a new video-focused smartphone. The Xperia Pro 5G is focused on help you shoot video and it includes an HDMI port, something we don't often see on smartphones, so you can connect it to a DSLR or camcorder to use as a monitor and to transmit video using 5G connectivity.
This Xperia Pro 5G is packed with a Snapdragon 865 processor, 8GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, 4000mAh battery, and triple rear camera setup. There's 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED screen with 21:9 aspect ratio, too.
Sony isn't saying when the Xperia Pro 5G will launch or how much it'll cost when it does.
